Select save tab>choose and mark box>ask about properties
accept or Apply options and close.
Save new document different name. When saving it should ask if you want to save properties> choose not save. Maybe it asks if you want to modify properties> choose yes> select box archive amongst read only, hidden or archive.
If this does not work.

B) Open Windows explorer>find and select the specific document> right click mouse> menu> choose properties> general> Amongst "read only", "hidden" or "archive" options, select archive box . Apply and Accept new properties and close properties window.

Open document again and now it should permit you to edit it.

Maybe you can save time check B) directly. If in general properties the read only option is selected>deselect >select archive option > Apply and Accept. Open again.

Good luck

I was looking to find out how to unlock my personal journal since 2006 in Microsoft Word. I tried one or two of the above answers which for me was time-consuming and I was afraid of losing eight years of my life entries. After lack of success with the answers above I tried a different route with my journal. I was scared it would not work, because I am not as computer savvy as I believe you are. This is what I did: I selected my complete document. Then I went to a blank page and pasted it. IT WORKED! I saved it under another name. The locked one is still locked for read only, but I now have a duplicate workable document. I hope you find this method valuable.

If none of the above works for you, you can also use a service or software designed for document unlocking; I can recommend a service www.password-find.com which I personally used back in the day and successfully unlocked a few Word docs.

Was it a trial copy of Word and the trial expired? If your computer is 60 to 90 days old this could be the reason.

are you on a network? If you are at work on a network, you may not have authorization to change or modify that document. Contact the author or the it department.

Check if the file is read-only then it wont allow u to save after modifications made.

alternative, after modifications- you can select "save as" to save it to a different name
