community? ie; scrubbing bed pans, picking up trash along the highway, anything that needs to be done, which would instill some pride perhaps but would be a helping hand not a hand out.

That would be better than exploiting them (welfare to work) to benefit the rich.
Maybe 20 hours each week, would keep them active, and help the community.
Prisoners too should be put to work to benefit society, and rehabilitate themselves.

no.

Why is it everybody disparages welfare recipients for the little they receive, when politicians and those with political connections reap hundreds of thousands of government money? Is it because welfare recipients are the " the least of thee"?
But there is no steady accountability for the well connected of the "work" or services they render. They too are on the public dole.

I think welfare recipients should be given a chance to attend courses which teach marketable skills.

If they are not amenable to receiving instruction or improving their lot then perhaps after a matter of time they should be held accountable. Still those who receive welfare are not getting rich most are barely above a subsidence level of living.

Futhermore, we give refugees SSI payments, food stamps and the WIC assistance without asking them to perform community service. Why should we treat Americans who along with their ancestors labored here much differently?

Of course not. If there is work to be done - however unskilled, and whether in the public sector or not - and someone to do it, then that is a JOB.

People can not be expected to do work for less than the minimum wage, and without access to basic provisions of workplace insurance (WorkCover in Australia) and superannuation.

If you are suggesting project-based traineeships that is something different, but suggesting that welfare recipients should be used as cheap labour to displace the people who already do these jobs is pretty poor economic or social policy.

Think again!

LOL. who is going to determine whether or not the victim you are targetting is "not disabled" enuff to perform the work? Btw, you are clearly not disabled(because you apparently don't realize that the system is currently set up that way) so it may be better for you to worry about instilling some pride in yourself rather than finding a way to dehumanize people inflicted with disabilities that you have determined single-handedly aren't worthy of assistance.

No, I don't think that people who receive public assistance should be treated as if they are on a chain gang. I think they should be given resources by which they might improve their situations (education & job opportunities), and an individualized plan for advancement, which includes measurable goals and a time limit for receiving benefits. Poverty should not be criminalized.

The fact is that the quickest way to lessen the aid lines is to get people to do something, be it community service or training. A lot of these people collect and work other jobs under the table.

Yes, good suggestion. We should institute an exchange of 'trash for cash'.

God knows there is enough work out there that needs to be done.

And, yes, I think some will attain a level of pride and responsibility that they won't otherwise have.

Disabled people should not be forced to work. Only those wanting to earn more should be allowed if able to do some suitable jobs.

That is a good point you make. I think that is a good idea. Not only would it give them a sense of pride and not make them be ashamed for having to be on it, but that certainly would discourage the freeloaders, too.
