Big business gained a lot in Viet Nam, it is said that Bell helocopter kept the war going an extra two years. I think it was decided after Korea that Nam would be the next hot spot, to play with their toys, reduce populations, and profit

The reason for the Vietnam war was to spread the stain of Communism to South Vietnam and use that as a base to disrupt free interests in South east Asia.

As a side note the Communists could never imagine their success, as the lose in Vietnam made America scared to use its Military for years after and made it leery of the CIA. This led to years of unchecked aggression by the Soviet Union and eventually aided 9/11.

There is never A reason - - - but rather a variety of factors. And there were several wars involving Vietnam but guessing that you are asking about America's involvement in Vietnam's internal squabbles. Misguided sympathy for 'the good guys,' any government claiming to be a democracy as opposed to communist, and a real desire on the part of America to play the role of benevolent big brother.
