I used to work Graveyards & felt heavy, Sleepy & tired all day. I realised that the root cause was the fact that I sleep too much when I do graveyard. Please ensure you sleep right after your shift & get up on exactly 7-8 hours not more. During your shift eat small quantities in regular intervals with plenty of water. This helped me & am sure it will help you. Remember the key is to sleep the right amount.

Yea my husband works grave shift too and it's gonna take a few months for his body to adjust to that schedule he has to get on some kind of routine. Something that works for him .My husband get off work at 8 home by 8:30 have kind of drink then he does a little chores,In bed by 11and I'll let him sleep until 6:00-6:30 .We will have dinner and 8-9 he's back in bed relaxing until11 get up get's shower and out of the house 11:30-12:45 and at work at 12. My husband use to be the same way until he followed a routine. And we both have the same days off so it works great for us..

your working against your body's natural timeclock so eventhough you got enough sleep during the day-your body senses that it's nightime and it thinks it should be sleeping.
i've worked nights for 7 years now and i still have days where i'm tired and cranky. i switch back to a regular schedule on my days off and that seems to help.
i also stick to a very strict routine on the days that i DO work. i go straight home after working, take my shower, brush my teeth then i'm in bed until 4p (even if i wake up before then-i stay in bed). this helps train my body to sleep at the same time on the days that i work.

Life is never right when u work graveyard,u get to where u have to rest the whole time your off ,just to make it back to work. Its not a good thing Im now 52 and going retire from this job in two years,if I can make it that long .Ive missed a lot working these damn hours Im really gonna appreciate being a day person again in 24months.I have worked nights since 1994.My advice don't do it,it changed me into a bore that wants to rest all the time.I did it for an early retirement at 54,hope its been worth it and my job is physical so its been hard especially when I menopaused about 50,oh well my advice is no you miss a lot.

Some soft, quiet music: nonfatty food, and, the thought that you are doing some thing for people, for society.
