There are four bowl games, and it's rotated every year. Last year was the Rose Bowl for national champ, this year I'm not quite sure. Anywhoo, the first two teams in the BCS poll will play for the national title. Buckeyes got the #1 spot, it all depends on who will get #2. USC is a major contender, with 2 games left against Notre Dame and UCLA. If USC wins both, they might move into the #2 spot and play agains the Buckeyes. Florida is also still in contention. Unfortunately, there's nothing Michigan can do except pray that both USC and Florida lose, so that they will be secured at #2. Won't know till everyone's finished with their games.

The rose bowl is part of the 4BCS bowls. the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange.
The Rose gets the winner of the Big Ten vs the Winner of the Pac Ten, unless they are ranked 1 or 2 in the BCS poll. If they are than that team goes to the extra game for the title this year.
Their spot then becomes an at large bid for that bowl. This year Ohio State won the Big 10. so they get the Rose. However they are #1 in the bcs so they will get bumped up to the title game.
The winner of the Pac 10 will still get the Rose unless they ( USC) are #2 in the BCS then they will join Ohio State.
If they are then the Rose gets 2 at large bids.
They will most likely take Michigan because of the bowls ties to the big 10 and the fact that Michigan will sell a lot of tickets.
Basically the Championship games rotates among the big 4 bowl sites. Each bowl has its conference ties it will honor unless their team goes to the title game. if that is the case they are replaced by an at large team.

The Rosebowl is where Michigan can end up at worst, (Also the Rose Bowl is not the National Championship game this year, it shifts between the Major Bowls) The way that teams are decided on going to the National Championship game is that they are voted on by the Coaches poll, which is where every coach in Divison 1 Votes to decide who should be in Numnber 1, 2, 3, and so on. The Top two teams play in The National Championship game.

The BCS has 5 of the many bowl games that are only for the BCS system.... with the Tostitos bowl in Ar. being this years championship game... The Rose bowl this year will have at least a big ten team (Michigan if it does not go to Tostitos bowl). The other bowl games are Fiesta, Sugar and Orange making the BCS system of 5 bowl games. Once all the remaining games are played, then we all will know where all the teams will play.

The Rose Bowl has a contract with the College Football Association, The Big Ten Conference, and The PAC 10 Conference that says that the champions of each conference will receive bids to play in the Rose Bowl with the exception of the following:

1. If Big 10 or PAC 10 champion is ranked #1 or #2 in the country, they will be playing in the bowl whose turn it is under the BCS/CFA agreement to host the national Championship.

2. If it's the Rose Bowl's turn to host the National Championship game, neither conference champion will be invited unless they are ranked #1 or #2 in the country at the end of the regular season.
