Hi there, I have quite a small fish tank, had it for about a year. About a week ago the filter started making a strange noise, like the noise it would usually make (humming) but much louder. I've cleaned it but doesn't seem to help. I'm not sure if there is a proper way of cleaning that I'm not doing or if it could be something else. Please help, I'm not getting any sleep!

do this simple thing first before you replace it, look at the end of the motor , most of them pop out, you will find a "fan like"piece, this is the one that cause the water to flow in/out the filter, clean it and clean its surroundings. make sure that this "fan like" thing is not broken or loose .
in some fish places, you can only replace this part instead of paying the money to buy a new one.

Sounds like your motor for creating bubbles not the filter itself. In either case unplug it over night and plug it back in in the morning. If it makes as much noise right away it's time for a new one.

Fish don't NEED the filter and bubbles constantly if it's bothering you that much.

probably something is broken inside the motor. Just buy a new one. They are very cheap at this size.

An advice would be to buy the same model keep the same filter media. If you do not then you will cause trouble in your tank.

With small tanks and filters you can clean them and/or fix them, but it is much cheaper to buy a new one than to work on the small ones. If you are mechanically minded you may want to play with the broken one to see how it works to work on future ones.

Take it apart if you can and clean out the muck from around the perpeller. That happened to me and I found one of my hairs wrapped around it. I have very long hair. It also might be touching the lid the vibrating.
Even if this is not it, I'm just tring to give you some verity.

extremely, my first suggestion could be to get a minimum of a 20 gallon tank in case you are able to handle to pay for it. a ten gallon tank is amazingly proscribing in terms of what fish you are able to save in it, and it extremely is harder to maintain than a extra robust tank because of the fact the water high quality can substitute speedier. countless the fish you notice in puppy shops are too huge to maintain in a ten gallon tank in case you purchase them interior the recommended numbers for suitable college length. do no longer question me why, yet many puppy shops do no longer carry aquariums extra suitable than fifty 5 gallons, yet they sell fish that should require a extra robust aquarium than that. very almost each shop i've got seen contains oscars which choose for a minimum of seventy 5 gallons. besides, in case you have your heart set on a ten gallon tank, pay interest to catx, fairly her article approximately stocking a ten gallon tank. She is usual with what she's talking approximately. specially, do no longer even think of approximately putting goldfish in a tank that small. those "lovable little goldfish" you notice in shops would be a foot long as adults and choose for 20 gallons of water in step with fish.

the impellers wear out quickly on those little filters, probably can't be fixed, just be prepared to purchase another when this one
finally dies
