Both sides regretted and still regret the partition of their country by foreign powers, and the North tried to forcibly reunify the country. It's not really like the US civil war as someone else said - that was one country from which a section tried to secede, Korea had been split into two countries and one side decided to retake the other section by force. North Korea is geographically larger but has a smaller population and is more rocky and mountainous, so not as good for farming, as someone mentioned.

It all started in 1945 at the close of WW2 when Russia declared war on defeated Japan & occupied the Korean peninsula. The Americans managed to negotiate a partition where they would take the southern half & the Russaisn, the northern life - the line of separation is also known as the 38th parallel.
One would suspect that the Russians agreed to let the Americans take the southern half - which incidentally, was also the more fertile portion as opposed to the north which was prone to drought & famine - as they would think it's a matter of time before the 2 Koreas would be reunited under communist control.
This happened sooner than later when the North, under political support from both Russia & China, launched an attack in June, 1950.
In short, the war & current animosity is a direct result of cold war politics between the 2 superpowers.

Not to different from our own Civil War, and yet they are separate. Just picture what would have happened here if we did not have a resolve to our War? However China and Russia major powers played a heavy influence along with the US after WW11 and then the rest of the Asian countries as well. Both sides held their ground for independence so not to be swallowed up by any outsiders and so far so good. At any time the Communists could have taken over the whole country and consolidated it as one except for the Korean War and America to assist. Russia wanted to blow Korea off the map at one time and we were the reason they did not. They blew up many of their airplanes and several with Americans on board during the cold war and after the wall came down as well. Korea has a great strength on both sides. Even though the one is communist the balance there is the free Korea and that being a threat and a goal for the whole communist Korea, allows the communist side of Korea to still maintain being Korean Communists not Chinese or Russian. They are Korean all and all and proud of it so proud they are all willing to die before either side is taken over by an outsider or each other.

Commies in the north wanted to own everything. Since they are commies they do not believe in buying it so they went to take it. The capitalists in the south did not like the offer and called the UN. The UN was as week as it is now but has more brains and asked the US to help negotiate a better price. The north still has not come up with the money.
