No, they have some similar symptoms, but are caused by different viruses.
Lots of people suffering from a heavy cold, complain that they have flu, but they don't.
A bad cold is not pleasant, but you can basically get on with your day to day tasks and work. But flu will knock you out for a few days, possibly a week, and you need rest.

a 'cold' cannot turn into a 'flu'. Both are viruses but are different. It is theoretically possible, however to contract a 'cold', and then contract the flu afterwards. Note that 'flu' refers to influenza, and that many people mistakenly interchange cold and flu.

That depends on what you mean by flu.
A cold is what we call the symptoms of a group of viruses that affect our sinuses and nasal passages. It can also cause throat infections causing the usually friendly bacteria in the throat to migrate to the lungs causing bronchitis. Some people refer to this stage as flu.
This has nothing to do with influenza which is a severe respiratory infection caused by a different group of viruses.
