The issue seems to be due to the improper communication.
So, I suggest you to reinstall the parallel ports.
If you are using Windows XP operating system then follow the instructions.
Often, devices are installed on a port and then disconnected from the computer without removing the relevant software, resulting in device conflict. Refreshing the parallel port will remove all the devices from the port list.
NOTE: You may have to reinstall the other peripherals on a
different port.
1. Close all applications and programs.
2. Click Start, "Turn Off Computer" and then "Restart". Wait for the computer to restart.
3. Click Start and then Control Panel.
4. Double-click the System icon.
5. Click the Hardware tab.
6. Click "Device Manager".
7. Click the plus(+) sign to the left of "Ports (COM or LPT)".
8. Select "Printer Port (LPT1)".
9. Click Uninstall.
CAUTION: If a message prompting you to restart your computer is displayed, Do NOT restart your computer.
10. Close the Device Manager window by clicking the "X" in the top right corner of that window.
11. Click Start, click "Turn Off Computer", then click "Turn Off".
NOTE: Ensure that the Turn Off option is selected, instead of the Restart option.
12. Wait for a few seconds and restart the computer.
13. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware", message will be displayed.
14. Click "Yes" or "OK" to allow your computer to detect your ports. It may take several minutes.
To verify that the "Printer Port" has been installed, repeat Steps 3
through 7 to get back to your Ports settings within the Device Manager.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
