It's essential for the maintenance and up keep of our local amenities, the police and fire brigade. Sorry.

I'm just one of those saps who pays it without looking into where there's any overlap from my disposal, recycling, road maintenance, police, road cleaning, stuff! I find it hard to work out where the difference is and who's supplying what! Water/Electricity even is split into mains supply and sewage....

I'd actually like to know so I can keep tabs on it as to who's doing what for how much and more importantly, who do I complain to when I don't get what I'm paying for?! Another thing about council tax (isn't that poll tax or some new name now?) ...you know they have different bands for your house or house value... why? Surely it's the same cost to collect bins and recycling etc from a little house as from a big one?
I can understand it costs more to supply more water, more electricity, more gas to a big house....but I thought those things were covered outside council tax .....see how naive I am......so what exactly IS covered by council tax that costs more for a big house than a small one?

Its a rip off, I pay mine monthly like most people, it can be very expensive depending on what band your in A being the cheapest. If you feel your council tax is to expensive you can appeal, tell them the reasons why and they will look into it and may even change your banding, I am moaning about mine at the moment. You can check on the council tax website to make sure your banding is the same as your neighbours (if your house is the same)

A necessary evil. None of us want to pay council tax but we all want better policing/schools/fire rescue etc.

Costs far too much for the amenities I receive.
I feel I am paying more for scroungers than for myself.
