not enough info is given.
did the boss pay back his friend with a genuine $100?
if we assume that he did, then the analysis goes like this:

what did the boss get:
worthless bill from customer + $100 from friend

what did the boss give:
$24 gift + $73 change + worthless bill to friend + $100 reimbursement to friend

total loss = give - get =
24 + 73 + 100 - 100 = $97

if however he didn't reimburse his friend, drop the $100 from the give

total loss = 24 + 73 -100 = -3, i.e. he profited $3
