In reality, probably so, but sometimes I don't think there is. If you tell a lie, you aren't necessarily breaking a promise; but if you break a promise you made without ever having intended to follow through, I believe you previously told a lie.

Now if what happened is that you made your girlfriend a promise that you didn't keep and now she's pissed and has told you that she feel she's been lied to, REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT IT tell her that you understand and quote what I said. She'll never let it go otherwise; I know -- I've been a girlfriend, too.

Yes, Ashly! There is a difference between lying and breaking a promise. Lying is when you are not truthful about something, someone, or some event. You fabricate the truth; whereas breaking a promise is when you give your word and not keep it. I hope this helps.

Lying usually involves premeditation, where the liar fully knows that he is deliberately not telling the truth. Breaking a promise, however, is frequently not premeditated, in that when the promise is made, it could have been made in all sincerity, but later, often because of unforeseen circumstances, it's broken. Many people underestimate their ability to keep a promise they've made, even if their intentions were in the right place.

A lie is an untruthful statement made to someone else with the intention to deceive. To lie is to say something one believes to be false with the intention that it be taken for the truth by someone else.

When you break a promise, you are not fulfilling a commitment.

The two are extremely different.

You can promise to be a better mother to your children. See how generalized this promise is? By clarifying the promise, you could break it if you neglect to read to them each day as a tool to increase their awareness for that tool (reading). Did you lie? Not at all. You failed to fulfill your obligation.

If you tell the teacher that you read to everyday and this is not the case, you have lied.

See the difference? :)

Yes.

Lying is when you tell someone you'll do something and you never intend to.

Breaking a promise is when you tell someone you'll do something and you really do want to at that time, but you either fail or change your mind later.
