Hey,
It depends on how old the bike is.
If it has a magneto or manual spark advance, the left hand grip, retard it.This is done by turning it all the way counter clockwise.
If it has points, Open the timing cover (right side located over crank case cover) kick the engine over slowley until the cam opens the points all the way. Check the gap in between the points. they should be set at .035 or the thickness of a matchbook cover. If the points appear to be pitted or worn they must be replaced. Points from the old 350 Chevy engine work well and are a economic alternetive to the HD OEM part.
Magneto or points, do the following.
Turn the throttle three times to prime the carburetor, then close the choke.
Kneel on the seat and keep both hands on the grips.
Ratchet the kicker until it catches at the top and give it a rabbit kick.
Don't stand on the kicker. If you experience a kickback, your going over the handle bars.
If the bike is cold blooded, you may have to turn the throttle at the same time your kicking over the engine.
If the bike doesn't start after a few kicks, remove the spark plugs (all old HD's have tool kits) and look at them. If they appear wet, You'll have to dry them out, A Zippo lighter works best. Kick the engine over a few times to clear the excess fuel. Replace the spark plugs and do the whole procedure over again but, this time don't prime the carburetor and only choke the carburetor half way.
This is only a general procedure, all old Harley's have their own personality's and the fuel / choke procedure may have to be modified. Once you dial it in on your bike, It'll start first kick every time.

I don't know how big your bike is (mine is a 250 honda) but what I do is push it to the top of a hill, that's the hard part. Then I get in a fairly high gear. The lower it is, the better, but mine won't grip the road and spin the engine well until it's in at least third. Of course, it is a dirt road. Anyway, hold in the clutch, start it rolling, hop on, get it going to a good clip, and pop the clutch. this should start the engine spinning. be carefull when it catches, because in that high gear your gonna be going fast. if it acts anything like mine this oughta do it, but if it's really big, (upwards of 750cc) this is gonna be really hard, and maybe impossible, because of the compression. hope this helps!

i own a 62 panhead and i found it is easier to be sitting on the bike.it helps if the bike is tuned right. you can stand on the side if your a small person.pump throttle three or four times before you start tring to kick start the bike.be sure the bike is in nutrail.it should start in just a few kick at the most mine usually take four kicks.

Choke on and ignition off kick the pedal through till it primes then turn on ignition and find top of kicker pedal stroke then with left knee on seat and right foot on pedal, kick it through. Old pan-heads work great this way. Hope this helps.

GAS! My son does this constantly (he did it in the womb, too), he is trying to get the bubbles out. It's good for him. It gets their muscles ready for standing up. He may like to kick against something, like the padded wall of a crib, as mine does.
