last year we went all out and spent $2000 on our kids, we have five..... only one present has survived to live to this christmas a bike!
So this year we put a budget of $100 per child on, When we buy them stuff now we try and make it that it has some educational value, we bye books on their favorite subjects or craft projects, we also buy puzzles and games the whole family can play, we try to encourage active play so things like balls and bats and stuff are good as well.
I beleive it it the thought that goes into the present then what the present cost!

Each child recieves one big gift off their list and several small-and of course "sock" thing which I pick up here and there starting around sept, grocery shopping, target, walmart or such. It does depend on how good the year is,this year is tight so the big gift (we have a 12 and 19 yr old) will run approx 200.00, then a piece of clothing or two,a book, some small things, maybe earbuds for ipods or itunes cards etc, I got gift cards with my poinys from our credit card so thats a plus every year to give, so maybe 300.00 each. When they were small-100-200.00. total

I recommend buying a really good book for them, along with other more exciting things. Like maybe a book about outer space, or one with some fun math puzzles.

i suggest you dont spend your money buying stuffs like video games or such addictive stuffs, cos all in all, it'll make them more materialistic over time.
get something sentimental, and maybe add in books/softoys.
depends on their age?

Anything you bought for your children is bought with love. Because children are loved. And anything bought with love is not costly/expensive.
