Almost all of these answers are correct, in some way (s), but they leave out the "God complex". This is a phenomenon common among politicos and police, as well as some other professions (see physicians). Whereby the individual has an urge and desire for power. And in the case of politics, religion is used as an excuse or motivation. Does the President not think he communes directly with God? Hmmm.... If you look at it historically, politics and religion have always been tied together, with religion being the cause of most (all) wars this world has seen. Too many people with the "God complex" feel the need to overcompensate (you don't want to know what for), and you end up with a clusterf@*k like Iraq.

You obviously have not studied history. Religion has always been in politics in America. Our founding fathers prayed at the beginning of their meetings and asked God for guidance and help to make decisions that would be best for our country.

It was also Congress that ordered that the Mormons should be killed because of their beliefs were a threat to the "American Way" in the 1800's. This is why they settled in the Salt Lake Valley. Then, the US Army was sent to Salt Lake City to make sure the Mormons weren't "practicing their blasphamy". Thank goodness we have all come to our senses and stopped telling people how to worship.

Or have we? I see questions on here all the time wondering why we don't "order" Muslim women to remove their veils. Unfortunately, religion is all over politics! Always has been and always will be.

Many Americans are Christians. When you are a Christian, God is first in your life! when all you know of right and wrong is based on Christian principle it gets in your politics.

Believe it or not it didn't sneak... it was on purpose.

When you have time watch PBS's Frontline series The Jesus Factor

Once they began using it as a tool to be elected, every other politician feared opposing it because that made them appear anti-christian.
