Does a lock-out tag-out kit suffice as for shutting down the main breaker?

There must be a mechanical interlock to eliminate possibility of backfeeding. The lock out / tag out kit will label the breakers as being turned off and possibly prevent the main breaker from turning back on, but does not supply the fail safe interlock system required.

In Las Vegas where I lived I've seen several peple and one electrical worker for the City either fry, and or, blow up, actually blow up a box.
I don't know if it's changed and how many cities are like this. We live in a Northern State now and they allow it. I'd check with the power company first, then go from there.
By the way, the box was blown of the side of the building, the generator, hooked up illegally without permission, fried, the guy burned and hurt, the owner, fined and four hundred for a new box.

A tag out would probably work. The reason you don't want the power going back into the line is because the transformers will up the power going the other way. And that could get the electrician killed trying to get your power back on.

The pros are home and family safety and the cons are home and family danger! So, spend a couple of bucks more and do the job properly so you can sleep every night at ease. I'm a mechanical engineer and I suggest you talk to a power electrical engineer.
