Spray the carpet with CITRA-SOLV from a height of 3 feet. Allow to dry for 3 to 5 minutes, then vacuum.Very light, fresh smell of real oranges.
Also fry used coffee grounds in a pan on the stove, or make popcorn, or use any candle with essential oil. Be patient & prepared to repeat.
One place I rented was unbelievable, & I'm asthmatic. An air cleaner worked real well, and since I knew no one else would be smoking inside while I lived there, I started off with washing down the walls, ceiling, cupboards.
Smell so permeated the wood drawers & cupboards that I had to clean them out & leave them open to air out.
Used the carpet idea 3-5 times weekly, it is an odor neutralizer, works by little microbes gobbling up the stinky stuff.
Also, last but very important, a spray called "Smells Be Gone"-a neutral, natural deodorizer that Febreze wishes it could be.
Label says to not use on fabrics, but I used it on all surfaces & even my hair after being in smoke, wouldn't be without it!
It is available for sure at all Ace Hardware stores, and they have a solid that you can leave out too, at Bed Bath & Beyond, some with scents that aren't too overwhelming.
The other I get at the health food store.
Remember to leave as much as possible the door/windows open, even just a snall bit makes a huge difference.
Both products I mentioned must be shaken first. Good luck.

Well, the previous answers are good, but this is my suggestion: First, I would hire a professional cleaning service to do a complete cleaning from floor to ceiling, end to end. Secondly, the concrete under the carpet should have been sealed with a product made by Zinsser called B I N. It is an alcohol based primer/sealer designed for the purpose of blocking out odor and staining from smoke, urine, etc. I've been in the paint and home remodeling business for many years. Let me tell you, this product works. The only thing more drastic is to knock the damn house down! Additionally, I would recommend applying it on every single wall and ceiling in the entire house, then repainting over it. That's probably not the answer you were looking for, but it's the best starting point. Everything else is just going to temporarily mask the odor. I know, I smoked for 17 years, and have now been smoke-free for almost three years. Good luck to you!

I have noticed that many people answered this question in the smae way that I am going to but, there is one way I do it, that was not mentioned. White vinegar... As long as you dont have pets, even though this wont hurt them you really dont want them drinking up your soultion... Take a small bowl, place it in any hidden corner in the room.. Vinegar attracks the smells where they live and within a week , when you go back to your bowl of vinegar, you will see that the water is now brown or brown tinted. If you don't have a hidden area, or have pets, you can place your bowl of vinegar, on a shelf, or counter. it will still work the same. You never want to cover up a smell, you want to eliminate it. Vinegar does that.

If you like the smell of dill pickles it's O.K.. It's pretty hard once the smell is entrenched. I remember some people have such a smell of cigarettes in their home, when they go to sell some people will turn away from this home.
Scrub, furniture and all, then wipe down the walls from the smoke that collects there. Use something like "Fabreze" or Lysol spray, then, simply don't smoke in the house. I can't stand to be in a house that has smokers, the smell, yuk!

Try this spray called OZIUM, you get in the auto parts store, it works great. Or try any scent of Oust, it kills the bacteria in the air and neutralizes the smell of nasty cig smoke. Both sprays are cheap and easy to use.

An ozone machine is worth its weight in gold. If you cannot purchase one (around $1000 to $3000) then contact a your local carpet cleaning companies and see if you can lease one from them.

Try using febreeze. Another good thing is getting smelly candles and other stuff you can plug into the wall. Last is getting a carpet freshener.
