shaving not only can cause nicks, but it also exfoliates the outer layer of skin, if you don't use a shave creme, gel, or lotion, and a lot of water you can get razorburn, this is multiple layers of skin removed...add alchol, and it is like pouring whiskey on a wound. hurts like hell!!!!!!!!! try an alchol free product, like a balm and it should stop the sting.

I don't know the chemical reason, but I do know I don't use after shave, never have. I don't think you need to use it. What is the point? Why would you want to deal with that every day? I use cologne, but I wait about an hour after I shave to put it on. I have never had a problem, so just don't use it.

Shaving irritates the skin, no matter what method you use. The alcohol is also a little irritating. Try something like Mennen Afta and add a little water to it. This works for me.

After shave has alcohol in it and alcohol burns. Also after you shave you have little cuts in your skin so the alcohol gets in to it.

Yes alcohol is an asstringient and antiseptic it closes small nicks and kills germs. If it really bugs you try an after shave balm. No pain.
