A hot flash (sometimes women refer to it as a hot flush or night sweat) is a symptom of menopause and also changing hormone levels which typically expresses itself at night as periods of intense heat with sweating and rapid heartbeat and may typically last from two to thirty minutes on each occasion for older women. The event may be repeated a few times each week or up to a dozen times a day, with the frequency reducing over time. Excessive flushing can lead to rosacea.

For younger women who are menstruating or are expecting it to occur soon (one to two weeks is how long premenstruation lasts), they may encounter hot and/or cold flashes. These episodes do not usually last long. One minute, a woman will feel cold, the next, hot. Hot and cold flashes for younger women only occur during their menstruation or premenstruation. If it occurs when a young woman is far from expecting her menstruation, than it may be a problem with her pituitary gland, seeing a doctor is highly recommended.

Hormone replacement therapy may relieve many of the syptoms of menopause, though there are many side effects of HRT and several factors to take into consideration before deciding to undergo HRT. In addition to traditional hormone replacement therapies, there are also natural HRT therapies that are being chosen by an increasingly large group of women.

firstly she needs to arrange a blood test to check her hormone levels, the test results should give an indication of whats going on. if the menopause is on its way (she is a little young, but heres no hard and fast rule about what age this will happen) there are several options available. natural remedies such as plant estrogens work for many women, these are easily available at most large pharmacies (boots ect in the UK). she could have a chat with her doc to see what they suggest, the HRT isnt the only way to deal with things.

She is in the early of stages of pre-menaposal. If she still has all her female organs she might need to be checked out with her gynocolgist. If she is having a normal period each month and no problems she might need to take some extra hormones to calm those HOT FLASHES. BUT i have heard that black cohash might help which you can get over the counter.I am 54 with a complete hysty and still having those hot flashes and i am on HRT. Talk to the doc.and find out a course of action.I feel for her deeply and its NO laughing matter for women. ME? Its a nightmare.

Yes, HRT is dangerous and unhealthy. Some things you just have to live through, I'm afraid. It will help if you are sweet and understanding. Change-of-life is a natural process and does not to be medicated. Just hang in there although it may feel tough for awhile. Best of luck.
Wow, you just added she is 40---(I don't think she'd be thrilled that you made such a mistake! :-) ) 40 is young. Has she seen her gynecologist? I think she needs to be medically evaluated as it may be some other condition, not the onset of menopause.
Again, best of luck!

She is probably in peri-menoapuse which means the start of it. She can either take remedies such as Black Cohosh from health stores amongst many others or go on a low dose of the contraceptive pill which I did which really helped. Read a book by Patrick Holford called Balancing your Hormones Naturally.

i sometimes have hot flashes it's natural among ladies who are into peri menopause. the best thing is just deal with it, its a natural process when estrogen production from the ovaries starts to decline and symptoms, such as hot flashes, may begin to appear. This is a wise time to check with your doctor so that you're prepared for menopause

Start getting use to it with a positive attitude. Read all there is to know about it, as this is the beginning of the menopause phase. Do that for as long as you can and when it gets unbearable seek help, as there are many routes to go on this. Do it together. Ok? Good luck!
