We are told that Patrick Henry spoke these words at the conclusion of his speech to the legislators of the Viriginia House of Burgesses in which he was attempting to convince them to commit troops.

Some of the details of the story may be more legend than fact. And it's especially interesting that you ask who WROTE these words. So far as we know the first person to write down the words of this speech was Henry's grandson and biographer who published it over 40 years later (in 1817)!

Because of this gap, some have suggested that the present form of this speech owes much to Wirt's polishing and embelleshing. But even if we do not have the exact words, there is no question that they embody his sentiment, and are consistent with his well-known oratorical style and skill.

Patrick Henry.....

On March 23, 1775, at St. John's Church, in West Virginia, To the Virginia House of Burgess..... I think they killed him anyway....

I'm wrong... He may not have gotten killed.... But, I thought he did.... He was reported to have been trying to get the House of Burgesses to pass a resolution to deliver the troops to the Revolutionary War....... Thomas Jefferson was in attendance.... as well as George Washington..... The crowd yelled in reply: "To Arms! To Arms!!!"
