I thought that the pilor light wasn't on, so i was going to reheat it. It was already lit. My heater is up as far as it goes, and the heat option is selected, but it's not getting any warmer. Yikes!?!

First of all .. have the gas company check for gas leaks. It is FREE. The technician can also probably tell you...depending on how friendly he feels that day...what is wrong. Without seeing the unit, this is my educated guess:

1. The dip tube. This is a long narrow tube that directs incoming cold liquid to the bottom of the tank, preventing mixing of incoming cold water with the out going hot water at the top of the tank. Without the dip tube, or with a broken dip tube, it may seem as though you run out very quickly, or you just get a lukewarm temperature.

2. The thermostat or thermocouple. This regulates temperature and causes the burners to fire when the water drops below a certain point. If it goes faulty, the burners will not fire as they are supposed to if they fire at all.

Unless you have a familiarity with tools and systems, I'd recommend hiring someone to take a look at it. If you insist on trying it yourself or cannot afford a tech .. here are a couple sites for your instruction. Know what you are doing BEFORE you start tinkering. These are not difficult to work on; the fact that explosive natural gas is involved makes it tricky. Turn it off before you work on the unit!

Find the manufacturer of your unit and look up the model on their website. There, you can get the exact location of various parts.

Good luck..be careful. Here are your links.

.you have a bad gas valve the thermostat on the unit is not allowing the unit to fire.. you need to call a plumber and have it changed but depending on the age of the water heater you probably should just replace the the water heater. putting money into an old unit is like beating a dead horse

for some reason the burner isn't lighting, either the thermocouple is broken, or no gas is coming out of the burner. Or something else could be wrong.
