There is a new game out that sounds like it might be what you're talking about. The category would be something like vegetables and the letter would be A. each player has to continue to name vegetables starting with the letter a until a given player runs out of ideas. it's called "last word."

That would be Scattergories and it is so much fun. You can even play it on a trip (car, train or plane) without the board but starting a A and working you way through the alphabet.
