Do you immediately say "not interested" and hang up as soon as they say who they are (before they tell you why they're calling) or do you listen to their pitch, WITHOUT INTERRUPTING and then when they are done say "not interested"?

I ask, because I do phone work for a popular newspaper, and as soon as I say where I'm calling from, people hang up on me because they ASSUME I'm asking them for money or to buy a subscription, and in reality, if they would just LISTEN to me, they'd find out that I'm giving out the Sunday paper for free for 8 weeks for the holidays to get the sales ads and coupons.

Ok..I'm just gonna say this about all the people who feel it's unwanted soliticitation...

What about all the sales ads that come in your newspaper? Is that solicitation?

What about commercials on your tv? Is that unwanted solicitation?

What about the billboards you see when driving down the road? Is that unwanted soliticitation?

What about the previews they show you at the movie theatre? Unwanted solicitation?

The bands that play before the main artist you go to see at a concert? Unwanted solicitation?

I hope I made a point.

I USUALLY WAIT UNTIL THE SALES PITCH IS OVER AND THEN I TELL THEM I'M NOT INTERESTED.

It really depends on whether or not they've interrupted something I see as more important! But generally, I'll listen, unless I can't understand what they're saying. AOL has some people calling all the time, and they have the hardest accent to understand. Most of the time, though, I look at the caller ID, and if the number is not identified (i.e., is just a number, no name) I won't even pick up. Which means you get my fax. Curiosity isn't a problem with me when it comes to phone calls. I just leave it if I can't tell who it is.

I will say "No, thanks" immediately & hang up the phone. Your call is one of several I can expect. If I go to your house selling vacuums, will you listen to my spiel? I think not. Quit conning us. It is the exact same thing. If you were not selling, you would not have a job. Your boss will sell my info & I will be pestered by more of you.

I've sold papers & done phone surveys. It's hard work. I didn't whine, did my job & was good at it. I earned the respect I received. It's your turn. Don't expect anything, put a smile on your face which will show in your voice, respect your customers, & do the job. If you do that , you will do well. Good luck.

You just HAD to defend yourself more didn't you? The more you do that, the more of a con you are working. Grow up! Quit the damn whining, do the job, or go find another line of work

I usually listen to their entire pitch without interrupting....and I like to ask a lot of questions to get them going....and then say no

The problem with newspapers these days is that with the internet, who needs them? By the time the newspaper gets to your doorstep, you can find the most recent news online.

Good luck with your work though.

I let my kids answer the phone, if they think its interesting they will be like hey mom this guy is givng out free stuff. Plus my kids will listen and i dont feel bad for hanging up, if my oldest daughter answers she starts asking the telemarketer questions its kinda funny but most of the time they actually answer her questions.

Funny you should ask.

NORMALLY, I say not interested and Hang up.

Now My son works as a telemarketer, he has told me some pretty graphic stories about some peoples reactions to telemarketers.

I try to at least give them time to give me the pitch, unless I am busy.

For me it depends on what time of day they call,if it is around the time I cook dinner or near bed time for the kids I will right off the bat say I'm not interested at this time but if you call at an earlier time,I might be able to listen to you and talk.

Click, asap. Then called the Atty general of my state and added my new phone number to the do not call list.
There's gotta be a catch to your pitch. Perhaps they'll be stuck buying it for a year then. Anything you get for free is usually worth every penny you pay for it.
Start off with "I'm not selling it, I'm giving it away!!"

Since I know they are doing a job,I just be polite and let them say their pitch and tell them whether or not I'm interested,no need in being rude, phone etiquette unfortunately seems to be dying out right along with chivalry.

Yes I'm too nice, I don't interrupt I just wait for them to finish. Sometimes I say no I'm not interested, and they try to convince me otherwise. It almost becomes an arguing match--why can't they just take no for an answer? I keep saying no, they keep insisting. And they always call at an inconvenient time.

I don't bother even saying anything - I hate telemarketers, block their calls when I can - and I used to have a job as a telemarketer many many years ago (I hated it) so it doesn't bother me - the sooner I hang up, the sooner they can dial someone else that might listen to them - that way I'm not wasting their time or mine.
