i am against the death penalty, but to be honest, i have no suggestions for other options. killing men costs money, but so does keeping them housed in jails. there is the idea of rehabilitation as an option, but it's an issue that makes many quite uncomfortable. as you can see by some of your answers, many people cannot handle even civilized discussion of a very serious issue. i would say it is a bad idea to reintroduce the death penalty in australia, but i would need more information on crime statistics and the reasons why it might (or might not) be brought back. i should add that killing one man or even several does not prevent future crimes of any kind. nor does keeping men locked in cages prevent crime.

I am against the death penalty. I think a person should not be let off so easy. I think we should make the people on death row do hard labor 12 hours a day 7 days a week until they fall over and die naturally.

I think that in certain circumstances the death penalty should defiately be bought back. I think when there is absolutely no question of the persons guilt and the severity of the crime, some people should be sentenced to death - maybe it would serve as a deterent.
PS. Just a a for instance: Ivan Milat (Backpacker murder), and the Frankston Murder - those 2 just come to mind now but there are much more.

I am strongly against the death penalty only for the simple fact that if I was facing life in prison I would want to die. I think that there should be pain and suffering inflicted on the ones who committed the crime, of coarse depending on the severity of the crime.

Im for the death penalty. We dont have enough room to stick all of them in jail. Besides jail is becoming more like a stay at a fairly nice hotel. They get TV, recreation....it shouldnt be like that. yes, death penalty is good

I am in two minds about this. Not because I am against the death penalty but because I wonder if would be better if they were made suffer like their victims. Prisons have their own 'law of the jungle' so to speak and instead of segregating prisoners let them tough it out with the other prisoners and get a taste of what it is like to suffer at the hands of another.

I'm firmly in favour of death penalty. Any self-respecting nation would have the death penalty.

i do not believe in the death penalty. I'm in USA, where in some states have it. my opinion is that it's too easy. i think that if someone commits a heinous crime they should be kept alive & kept in solitary confinement to suffer for the rest of their lives. death is the easy way out.
