scientists still dont know why exactly we get hiccups. there are theories like they were phased out by evolution and we no longer need them or that they are muscle exercises for when we are fetuses.

It's an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm muscle. Basically, something causes it to get out of whack for a few minutes (or hours) It can happen if you're drinking or eating something or for no reason at all. It happens to me sometimes if something interrupts my regular breathing pattern. It's why some people think holding your breath helps to get rid of them as if your breathing pattern is misaligned and you need to get it back on track.
