All you need to make soap is a triglyceride (fat) and Sodium Hydroxide Solution (lye). You can use any sort of fat or oil that you would use for cooking, Lard, olive oil, shortening, etc. preferably 75% or more lard or other saturated fat and 25% or less of some unsaturated fats. Also if you add a tiny amount of beeswax it will help the texture. The steps involved are to melt the solid fat, oil, and beeswax together until they just reach a liquid state, then add your solution of Lye to the fats and stir until the entire thing is about the consistency of tooth paste. Once it reaches that consistency, pour it into your molds and let it sit for a fortnight (2 weeks) before you use it. If you use too much lye you will end up with caustic soap, but if you don't use enough you will end up with soap that still has unsaponified fats in it. To prevent this use a saponification calculator, it will tell you how much lye to use based on your oil selection:

I made soap once in chem class and had fun with it.
