There was a special on CNN last night about how scientists are studying happy people with some suprising results. I'm a happy person, I'm a realist optimist, and I'm content with my life. There are somethings missing, but if I never receive those things I would still say my life was completely happy. If I died tomorrw it would be with no regrets or sadness. So I wonder are you happy?

I apologize for the length of this, so if you read it, thank you :)

I have what's called "double depression," so I guess I have to say that I am not a happy camper. I haven't been happy since I was little. I still joke around and stuff, and I can laugh at many jokes, but for most of my life it seems, I have had this dark cloud over my head.

I think it's because when I was 7 yrs. old, I watched my schoolmate die after she was run over by a large truck. It was extremely graphic, and I remember almost every single detail, which is strange because I have memory problems. Her little blue eyes were half open, and I literally believed that she was looking directly at me, communicating her pain and death - and I soaked it all up. I am close to 50 now and it still seems like yesterday.

I also attended 8 police funerals, two of them were double and one was a suicide - all before I was about 26 years old or younger. I've had about 9 people that I knew, some very closely, in my entire life, that committed suicide, including one of my doctors, and many others die unexpectantly and / or in a graphic or violent way. Etc., etc., etc...

The last two things that really knocked me backwards was to see my mom dead of a heart attack, and a few years later, to watch my dad die a slow, agonizing death for about a half hour before he finally took that last breath.
They did live long lives, and were the best of all parents, plus my siblings are the best ever.

Besides having God in my heart, one thing that keeps me strong inside, are the lyrics to a song called "Stand A Little Rain" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I applied it to my lifelong depression and it's always given me strength to hear it:

Stand A Little Rain Lyrics:

Dark cloud is coming
Headed straight for your heart
Might get just a little bit crazy, baby
Might try to tear us apart

When the storm blows over
Only the strong love remains
If we're ever gonna see a rainbow
We have to stand a little rain

Everybody wants love to be easy
But it's never been that way
Each love starts out with blue skies
Sometimes those blue skies turn grey

When the storm blows over
Only the true love remains
If we're ever gonna see a rainbow
We have to stand a little rain

The thunder rolls
And the lightning strikes
Hold on, darling
It's gonna be alright

'Cause when the storm blows over
I swear my love will remain
If we're ever gonna see a rainbow
We have to stand a little rain

If we're ever gonna see a rainbow
We have to stand a little rain

Well, I wish someone would do my work for me and the kids would pick up after themselves, that would be smoother I suppose, but I appreciate them everyday, and I'm glad they're with me and I miss them when they're not there, and yeah, I have a creative streak that I indulge in now and then. That makes me happy. I wasn't always that way.

Happiness is a choice! If we choose to be happy it will affect how we make decisions. Whom we choose to be friends with, etc.

I think we all are born happy, but as we reach adulthood we become brain dead and then have to relearn some things like, happiness.

Perhaps the secret to happiness is to never grow up :)

I am a happy person, it is because I choose to be happy.

Happiness and optimism go hand in hand!

I'm neutral. I'm not happy-go-lucky, but I'm definitely not depressed and suicidal, either. I think there are too many of both in life to really be one or the other, but that's me. It also depends on what is going on in your life, but then again that's usually a temporary effect.

I'm with you "Step" . Life is full of challenges but I love it and would not change a thing. There is a saying "Ships are safe in the harbour, but that is not what ships are for!" I could not stand it if life was perfect. Live your wildest dreams!...
