Gently suggest to them that they need to take a reading class. Or give them some assistance yourself. Many people who have difficulty reading have dyslexia or other disorders that make it difficult for them to understand the written words on a page. Have a lot of understanding and patience and stick by their side. Encouragement also goes a long way. See what is available in your area for help and suggest that you will attend the class with them.

It would make me crazy because I'm a nut about grammar and spelling. It's even worse since I'm a journalism major. If he can't keep up intellectually, I'll find someone else.

depending on how good your relationship is with him, you should ask him about it and see how feels about it. ask if he's willing to take classes or just have you teach him a little more. let him feel free and comfortable to ask you questions about reading or spelling. don't pressure him. just ask. let him know you're there to help him out.
