My boyfriend twitches when he's falling asleep/sleeping. I noticed the other night that he wasn't breathing. This lasted anywhere between 5-10 seconds (I counted and watched and felt for 30 minutes). I took notice that he twitched...took a deep breath...and started all over again. A few times during the time he wasn't breathing, his heart would skip a beat.

Now, I do not think it's sleep apnea, because he doesn't snore, and he doesn't fall asleep in mid-sentence (during dinner, etc).

Does anyone know what's wrong?

Sleep apnea - you don't have to snore to have it and it is very dangerous

Apnea is not Narcolepsy

He needs a sleep test

i dont think that anything is wrong with that because i do that almost every other night. My roommates gets so freaked out but its a way of life and you just have to get used to it. I found out that it wasn't really anything serious because i went to my cardiologist and they gave some test were you were a monitor for like 24 hrs. the results came back and apparently my heart like skip several beats at night when I'm sleeping. the doctor said it could be due to stress on the heart in the day time so i took it easy for like a month and took the test again and it came back normal with less heart beat skips
so my advice is to just tell him to take it easy and relax and the skipping heart beat no breathing and twitching would probable stop

When you stop breathing while you sleep this is SLEEP APNEA. He needs to see the doc ASAP and get tested. Snoring is not always present with sleep apnea and falling asleep mid sentence has nothing to do with sleep apnea. My hubby was just diagnosed and he is not a snorer. You boyfriend needs to get tested soon. If he doesn't think it can be serious tell him that sleep apnea was part of Reggie Whites problem the famous football player who died not long ago.

Just because he does't snore does not eliminate apnea. I have a close friend whose husband has this exact symptoms to a t and was diagnosed 2 months ago with apnea...it can be serious but once they see the doctor sleep is fulfilling and not interupted...even if he doesn't notice it effects after help he will feel better. promise.
