Pick a color. Match your tree to the room it is in, or coordinate it.
Gold is gorgeous, so is silver. I personally like to mix green, red, and white.
Pick shiney ornaments, or glass ones. The lights of the tree shine through the glass ones, very pretty. Shiney ones reflect the light. Both pick up the light from the room in the daytime.
Pick a theme. I saw a tree decorated with painted wooden ornaments, like toys, boats, trains, soldiers, very cute, it had multi color lights. . Saw one in tartan plaid. Another was all snowflakes and icicles, clear lights. Saw one in all angels.
The style this year is all one color ornaments and lights, with big ornaments..
Here is a trick, buy some bigger, longer ornaments for the gaps in the tree[and the bottom], and some smaller ones for the middle of branches, and smallest ones for the top, and very ends of the branches. I coordinate the color of the end ornament to match the ornament on the branch, it draws your eye there.. I buy some of those little glass balls, that come in a plastic round package, so many for a couple of bucks.
Another cute trick, I tuck a small angel, or a doll, or a Santa face in some of the gaps, and I love to do so at eye level. People get a start when they come close to the tree and there is Santa looking back.
I have a pink tree, a cardinal tree[the bird, not the baseball or football team], and a big whatever tree.
I admit to having some Waterford Crystal ornaments. I play with the lights behind them, so they shine through the ball. It is spectacular, you can see the glow clear across the room.
Last year, Good Houskeeping magazine, Martha Stewart, Better Homes and gardens, all had xmas trees, and ornaments. Type Christmas tree into your browser, I did. also ornament.
Hope this helps. Merry Christmas.

I love to go to the mall and look at how the professionals decorate the trees in the mall courts and the individual stores. You can get lots of good ideas there. One thing that can make a tree look very professional is red and gold ribbon with large bows and ornaments in the same colors. YOu could also go with green and blue with gold or silver, whatever suits you. Type Christmas decorations into your search engine and see what comes up. You may find some good web sites that have pics of decorated trees there.

Growing up we always had the traditional tree: colored lights and all the ornaments we had made or collected over the years. And my mom always made it just perfect and beautiful! I am married now and this will be the first time my husband and I put up a full size tree (there was no room in our old tiny apartment). We only have a handful of ornaments we've collected (my mom kept most of my old ones) so far, so I'm going to buy some classic red, green and silver glass ball ornaments to fill the tree. I love classic Christmas colors! But I have seen some gorgeous themed trees: white, silver and hot pink; green and gold; red and gold; white, silver and blue; silver and green...the possibilities are endless! Have fun with your decorating!

For ideas, just go to the section of any store where magazines r sold. U'll see professional decorate. Clear or white lights usually make for elegant trees. Make sure u have plenty of lights for the dimension of the tree.
I tend hang snowflakes because I like the way they shimmer with the lights. Do u have Lowes Home Improvement centers... they usually have mini version trees in their sections to give u ideas.
Gold or silver are elegant on trees. If u use solid bulbs they make sure your ribbon is colorful. U could have a round bow on top with ribbons cascading down each side of the tree.
Also many nursery's that sell plants usually have a Santa shop where u can get wonderful ideas. I've seen a firefighter have little toy trucks, doll collector =dolls, old fashion Christmas with gingerbread cut outs , candy cane mouses, icle shape ornaments. Showing a special collection of ornaments. Since we have beachouse I tend to use shells and other nautical stuff for there.
DIY network search engine gives u 9 options under tree decorating

Our Christmas Tree in work is very elegant. Green Tree, White Lights, White ornaments, Holly Picks with silver tips, silvery white glittered ornaments. Holly picks are just a fake bunch of holly wrapped on a wire. The wire you can wrap around the branch. Then we take thin organza ribbon to use as garland. We got most of the decorations in a craft store like Michaels or JoAnn's. The tree topper is a large silver bow.
We always wrap empty boxes to put under the tree.

I decorate my tree with white lights, silver garland (gold is nice too) red balls and red bows. It always looks really pretty. I dont know any sites though. Your best bet is to stick with a colour scheme if you want elegant. if you want to go red then get almost everything in red like I do, or gold if you want to go gold which is also pretty. I also like that ribbon like garland people use...very pretty.

White lights or any solid color like blue looks very elegant. Remember simple is always better.
