Dude, that totally sucks. I just got laid off from my job too and I have a kid. I used a credit card to buy her a few presents...I know I can't pay the bill, but my kid will have an ok x-mas and go one more year believing in Santa.
I can't believe you got fired for that. If you work in the medical field, I would think that you are a mandated reporter which requires you to report ANY abuse...you should sue or something because you did the right thing according to the law...at least the law in my state.
Good luck!!

Hey - your kids don't need big fancy things for christmas. Make them something...then just make the day really fun. I once made a treasure hunt for the pressies I could afford,to stretch the gift giving out abit, the kids remember it as the best christmas ever. The gifts included a game each which we all played. Kids do understand when times are tough. Charity organisations are there to help you.

I did not buy any X'mas gifts to my nieces when they are babies, I saves the money to buy things when they are over two or three.
Your employer has wrongfully dismissed you, check out some free legal aid in your area and get help to sue them, or contact government's labor branch department for a complaint, or file a human rights claim against them. You have to find out which is suitable for your case.
Salvation Army gives out lots of free toys, clothings, gifts every year, please go to them. Some community centers and companies have adopt a family program for X'mas every year.
Holiday season is a good time to find work as well as stores are busy, I am thinking of getting one more job now. As long as you are hard-working, willing to work, you will find one any time.
Good luck.
