The really depends on what you are eating at the time. Red meats generally go well with a nice bold Red wine, whereas fish and poultry are generally served with a lighter White wine.

Whatever your palate prefers...those old rules don't necessarily apply anymore. Folks are 'mixing it up' these days.
LOL!
A decent dry white can complimant red meat, depending on how it's cooked, & the side dishes.
And, as was brought to my attention a bit ago, ANY wine goes w/ popcorn!
HAHAHAHA!!!
Forget pretention---go with what you like.
