I depends on the type of life I guess.. Are we talking about bacterium or intelligent life.

In either case, I believe the effects would be profound. And no it does not necessarily debunk religion per se. As the "Creator" that most religions believe in created the universe and any life found within.

Frankly, As a devout Catholic, I find it hard to believe in the infinite vastness of our universe that we lowly humans and the other animals found in this planet we call "Earth" are the only forms of life... It is virtually impossible mathematically.

... your question certainly is profound...

I guess the best answer is just that... the discovery of life elsewhere will get ordinary people to THINK more... and less about petty things like waiting in line for the new PS3 at Best Buy...

If there was physical life on other planets, as in living "aliens", it would make a lot of people fascinated but overly paranoid at the same time. Are they going to invade us?! Hence, there may be an overemphasize on military and war technology.

If it was just traces of life, nothing will happen. It'll make news for a week and then become an afterthought like every other major news story.

it will change our belief in the uniqueness of life on earth and the belief that we are the only intelligent beings in the universe, (one of the side effects will be in our religions, that are all based on this assumption) it will push us to find other life and especially other intelligent life. if we succeed to communicate with other intelligent life, the exchange of data could probably change our life dramatically.

Not at all. Communication over interstellar distances is obviously impractical, so we aren't going to find out much more about such life other than that it is there.
