My fiance and I are getting married in 18 days, and we are trying to have a baby. When I reach around 4-5 months, we were planning on buying lots of supplies to stock up, like diapers, blankets, nuetral clothes (green, yellow and white--we want the baby's sex to be a surprise). A lot of people have told us that while getting blankets, clothes, pacifers, bottles, etc is ok, they have told us NOT to buy diapers ahead of time, while some people have told us "You can NEVER have too many diapers".
I've never had a baby of my own before (just my fiance's son, and we didn't have him full-time), and not all the people that have told me to buy or not to buy diapers have children, and I don't know who to listen to!
So I decided to get on here and ask, since there is such a diverse realm of people that answer questions.
So my question to moms is: Did you stock up on diapers before your baby was born? Is 4-5 months before the baby is born too early to buy diapers?

Yes, definitely stock up. We stocked up and it was so convenient and you don't have to spend tons of money all at once on diapers that way. And you'll probably get diapers for your baby shower too, but you can never have too many. Wal-Mart will let you exchange them, so just don't open any until you know for sure that you will use that bag. We also stocked up on wipes. They won't grow out of those, so you can definitely never have too many. When I was pregnant everyone told me that I couldn't have too many clothes, but I ended up with so many cute outfits that my son never even got to wear. Also, make sure you get a preemie size outfit for the baby to bring home from the hospital. Take a 0-3mo as well, but my son was 7lb 6.5oz and 21 1/4 inches and he didn't wear 0-3 month clothes until he was almost 2 months old. Good luck and congrats on the wedding!

I have been told both as well. The reason some people have said to be careful buying too many diapers is that some babies are born too big for newborn diapers. If you have cases of those lying around, you'll be out a lot of money if the baby is born really large. However, I'm going to get some soon, just not open them and tape the receipts to the package so that I can exchange them for a different size if I need to.

I am 17 weeks pregnant and I have not bought any diapers yet, but I have been buying baby stuff since I found out. That way it doesn't all hit us at once right before the baby comes.

Why on Earth would you not buy diapers ahead of time?

I agree, you don't want to go crazy and buy 16 packages of size Newborn, but you'll want to have some ready. Those first few weeks are hard enough without having to runout and buy diapers.

What I would suggest is buying 2 packages of Size Newborn and 2 packages of size 1. That way, no matter the birth weight, you'll have some diapers on hand that will fit. I used Pampers Swaddlers on my son, but now that he is bigger, we are using Huggies Supreme or Little Tykes 'Snug n Cozy' that I find at Big Lots. Also, there are diapers at the hospital that you can take home with you. Someone mentioned that the baby could be allergic to diapers, and that is true. But it is very, very rare. If you are afraid of this, when you buy the diapers, pick out two different brands.

I also bought one pack of 12 cloth diapers in case of some bizzare allergic reaction. If you don't use them as diapers, they make the most excellent birp cloths and cleaning rags!

And be careful of the bottles and pacifiers that you purchase ahead of time. Make sure to get a variets of different pacifier shapes, because some babies can be very picky. For the first few months, my son would only take this one brand, and at very first, only the ones made of latex, not silicone.

Now at 9 months, he will take anything, because he more wants to play with it than suck on it.

And bottle nipples can be either latex or silicone, and some babies have a preference. Latex, I've found, gives a little bit more where silicone is sturdier. A few weeks ago, my son began to refuse the latex nipples. I have no idea why!

If you haven't had your baby shower yet, I wouldn't buy clothes or blankets, because that is probably what you will get the most of. That, and you will quickly become sick of white and yellow and green if that is all you have.

If you see an outfit that you just have to have, go ahead and get it, but get it in a 3-6 month or 6-9 month size. Most of your gifts will be a newborn or a 0-3 month size.

And I agree comepletly with the person that suggested buying one special boy outfit and one special girl outfit. Bring both to the hospital so you'll be ready, no matter what! My doctor's thought that my son was going to be very small, so we brought two outfits. One sized newborn and one sized preemie. He ended up being a perfectly average 7 lbs, 13 ounces, so the preemie outfit went unused!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, and good luck with the baby!

I didn't stock up. Both my friend, who just had twins 3 days ago, and myself asked everyone coming to the baby shower to bring diapers. Any size diapers. Most people did, in addition to other presents. Do what you think is a good idea, if you are not going to have a shower start stocking up as soon as you get pregnant, if you have a shower ask for diapers, register somewhere where they those huge boxes, most people I know always give moms-to-be diapers. Good luck on getting pregnant

I got more stuff then I use at my baby shower.. I got a wide variety of diapers at my shower.. I had so many diapers, it lasted all the way up until just recently.. I went from newborn to size 1 to size 2 like nothing... I would suggest to stalk up on Size 2 diapers.. those are what you're going to use the most because they start using the big weight gap... I would only use stage 1 diapers a package at a time, so that they didnt go to waste.. Walmart is an excellent store to stock up on diapers cheap.. I would suggest getting a size bigger for overnight though.. I would wait to purchase your things until after your shower.. then you can pick up the stuff that wasnt purchased.. Good luck on having a baby! Congrats on your marriage, and well wishes!

I have 2 children, and though we received alot of diapers at the baby showers, we ran out pretty fast! I would reccommend buying 1-2 packs of newborn diapers because noone ever thinks to gift those, and they are great for the umbilical cord area. do stock up, but buy maybe 2 of the boxes in each size until after the baby shower. you don't want to go crazy with them, because some babies are sensative to certain brands of diapers, where my oldest could only wear luvs, my youngest could not. also, fyi, if there is a walgreens in your area, thier store brand diapers are just as good as huggies, and 2-4 bucks cheaper!

you don't want to stock up too much because babies do grow very fast! even though the package says 8-15 pounds, your baby might need a bigger size like mine did!

The only problem with buying a lot of newborn diapers is that they grow very quickly. I remember having to give away about half of a package of newborn diapers because my daughter had a growth spurt. Also, if you have a large baby, he or she may not need the small size for long.

I think 3 or 4 packages would be a good stash.

If you stock up on diapers buy more of the bigger sizes because baby might not fit in the newborn. Never know how big baby will be. If you are planning on having more than one then go for it. Also I wouldn't buy alot of baby bottles or pacifiers because some babies won't take certain bottles or certain pacifiers. So if you buy alot of bottles or pacifiers and the baby won't take them then you wasted money. Why not just save money in an account just for the baby and then once the baby is born then buy alot of the diapers and pacifiers and bottles once you know what they will use. Hope this helps

You can never have too many diapers. I started to buy diapers when I was about six months along. If you have a Sam's or something like it then it is best to buy in bulk. Do not worry about the baby growing out of them because stores will take unopened packages of diapers for exchange ( I know Wal-Mart and Target will for sure). You can never be too prepared because you never know what is going to happen to your finances while you are pregnant. You might be like me and have to take an early unexpected maternity leave from work. Congrats.

I'm not a mother but I am a part- time nanny. If you don't stock up on diapers, it'll seem like you spend more time going out to buy them than you spend changing them. And if you don't use all of one size, there are lots of places that you can give them to or even save them if you plan on having more than one child. Out of anything you're stocking up on (besides the clothes) diapers are a must. I would personally say that 4-5 months is a little early, but it all depends on how much time you have and how you are in your pregnancy. but as long as you're pregnant, i don't see the problem. you'll use them eventually. it's not like they expire. Good luck with starting your family.
