You need to use the quadratic equation as it is not factorable into rational expressions.
The form of the equation is:
ax^2 + bx + c = 0
So in your case,
a = -2, b = 6, c = -3
and the solution is:
x = [ -b ± √(b^2 - 4ac) ] / (2a)

so substitute and reduce.

x = [ -6 ± √(6^2 - 4(-2)(-3)) ] / (2(-2))

x = [ -6 ± √(36 - 24) ] / (-4)

= [ -6 ± √12 ] / (-4)
= [ -6 ± 2√3 ] / (-4)
= (3 ± √3)/2

-2x² + 6x + -3 = 0
For cuadratics with the form ax² + bx + c = 0 use this formule:

x = [-b± √(b²- 4ac)] / (2a)

so:

x = [-6 ± √(6² - 4(-2)(-3))] / (2(-2))
x = [-6 ± √(36 - 24)] / (-4)
x = [-6 ± √(12)] / -4
x = [-6 ± √(2*2*3)] / -4
x = [-6 ± √(2²*3)] / -4
x = [-6 ± 2√(3)] / -4
x = [3 ± √(3)] / 2

x = 0.63397459621556135323627682924706

ó

x = 2.3660254037844386467637231707529

substitute and confirm it 0 = 0 for both answers.

add 3 to both sides

-2x^2 + 6x = 3

Complete the square (b/2)^2 = 6/2 = 3 ------ 3^2 = 9 (this is the c value)

-2x^2 + 6x + 9 = 3 (you also have to add 9 to the 3)

Multiply everything by -1

2x^2 - 6x - 9

Factor

(2x - 3) (x - 3) -----FOIL it out and you get the previous equation.

2x - 3 = 0 x - 3 = 0

x= 3/2 x= 3

2006-11-20 16:53:06 · answer #3 · answered by J3Buckets 2 · 2 3

-2x^2 + 6x -3 = 0
-2x^2 + 2x + 3x - 3 = 0
2x(-x + 1) -3(-x + 1) = 0
(2x - 3)(1 - x) = 0
Either 2x - 3 or 1 - x = 0
Put 2x - 3 =0
2x = 3
x = 3/2 (or) = 1.5
Put 1-x = 0
-x = -1
x = 1
x = 1, 1.5 are the two solutions that satisfy the equation.

-2x^2 + 6x -3 = 0
2x^2-6x+3=0
x=(6+/-√(36-24))/2
x=3+/-(1/2)√12
x=3+/-√3
x=3+√3, 3-√3

2x^2 - 6x + 3 = 0

quadratic eqn

(6 +_ (36- 4*2*3)^.5)/(4)

(6+- (12^.5)/4
(6+_ 2sqrt(3))/4

= (3 +- sqrt(3))/2

not really sure. maybe -2x^=3/2-6x/2
-2x^=3/2-3x

x^=-3/4+3x/2

x=the square root of -3/4+3x/2
