To quote something in an essay, put the little quotation marks ("")
and then put your parenthetical citation. (where you got the quote from). And then, at the end of your essay, make sure you have a work cited page. And you're good to go!!

if you are quoting on an essay, use the short method, following the next steps:
1.- open parenthesis
2.- write the last name of the author
3.- year of publishing
4.- use :
5.- page (p.) or pages (pp.) where the material is extracted
6.- close parenthesis

example:
(Fischer 1993: pp. 11-19).

It depends on your format. Most of the time if you use your quote and unquote marks and then put into parentheses ( ) the last name of your source and page number it works.

... you QUOTE it. Duh. For example... to quote "life is unfair" by John Kennedy in a paragraph, you go:

John Kennedy stated once in a press conference in 1962 that "life is unfair." His short words of wisdom prove that... blah blah blah.

Remember, you ALWAYS have punctuation INSIDE of quotes.... ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless the quote is in the middle of the sentence and there is no need for a comma or anything. Also, give credit using a Works Cited page if needed.

It depends on a lot of things, but if you're using MLA format, here's some useful links.
