Three kids each contribute $10 to purchase a $30 cd player. (This is in Oregon; no sales tax.) After they leave, the store owner realizes the item is marked down to $25. He hands five singles to his clerk and tells him to run out and reimberse the kids. The clerk catches up with the kids, but he is less than honest, and besides, you can't divide 5 by 3. So he gives them 3 dollars and pockets the remaining 2. Now each kid has paid $9, for a total of $27, and the clerk has 2, making $29. We started out with $30, what hapened to the last dollar?

first to answer correctly will get best answer.

good luck!

The riddle misdirects you to find the answer. 3 people with 10 each is thirty dollars. (ok in both directions) They paid this. The cost of cd player is 25 dollars. thirty minus 5 is 25 plus the five the clerk gets from manager is 30 again. all thirty dollars are accounted for. 30 minus 25 is five (same five given to clerk).l The fact that the "change is 3 dollars making the cost 27 is 25 for the store plus 2 the clerk kept. Again 30 dollars is accounted for.

Its not answerable mathematically. Its an anomaly. You will never answer this if you try that way. Use common sense... There is no extra dollar, the sleazy clerk kept 2, kids got 3. $25 for player = $30. He should have kept it all and told his boss he gave it back. 5 is better than 2, right?

NO JNC

They did NOT pay $9.33 each! (Where's their change? What happened to the extra penny?)

They each paid $9. That's $27. Take away the $2 the guy kept.
That leaves you with $25 - the amount the store kept for the item.

its a trick question because after the clerk gave back the 3$ it would add up 2 28$ not 27$ therfore there would be no correct answer

StyleDiva and several others have the correct answer. You want to hear something funny though? I was once asked the same type of question but with different circumstances and couldn't figure it out. So I asked my algebra instructor thinking she of all people would be able to figure it out. I was wrong. She and I went over that problem I don't know how many times and she finally gave up. Until I read this question and the answers I had completely forgotten about it and I had never been given the correct answer. To find out that it is so simple to answer makes it even more astonishing to me that my instructor couldn't figure it out.

Nothing.
if they got only 3 dollars back, the cost of cd player is 28.
30-5 = 25
25+3 = 28
2 was kept by clerk.
each paid 28/3 = 9.333
