No. It doesn't affect the ball until after the ball goes through the hoop. Originally a basket was used to catch the ball when it was shot (thus the name basketball), but that proved to be hard to get the ball out. So they cut a hole in the bottom. Eventually a net was added to the rim to slow the ball down so that it was easier to tell if the shot had been made.

For me it really affects my shot. Having that clean, long net really helps me focus my shot and gives me more accuracy. Without the net, i have to focus on just the rim, which is harder for me. So having the net there actually improves my shot. Plus, who doesn't love the sound of that clean swish when u make that perfect shot. That sound is music to my ears.

it can for the worse or better, but regardless of which it does, the fact that it effects your shot in general means you arent focused enough.
