It was a popular thing years ago when fresh fruit was hard to come by and the dried fruits were baked to a delicacy.

It has nostalgic value to some, but the product has been dimished to a store baked and marketed (or mismarketed) product...dry and chewy at best.

There are fruit breads of Scandanavian origin (stollens) which are better when made freh.

Some people do like it. The tradition of fruitcake goes way way back. You know when people grew what they ate. Fruit from spring and summer would be dried or candied so that it could be used as a treat in the winter months...when fruit trees were not yielding. Through time it was almost like a status symbol to have such a luxury in the middle of winter. It's like setting out your finest china at a holiday dinner...showing off in a way. The idea is lost on the last few and current generations simply because no matter what time of year it is we can go into a grocery store and pick up just about any type of fruit we'd like to have!

Obviously- YOU don't have an Aunt Edna. For some mysterious reason, the vast majority of Aunt Ednas in the world LOVE fruitcake. And they're bound & determined that everyone ELSE should love them- too. So every holiday season they single handedly rev up the fruitcake business -by ordering fruitcakes for all their relatives... -And the next thing you know, you've been blessed. Look at it this way, they make GREAT Christmas conversation pieces! :)

I know!!! And weddings as well!!! My husband and I don't really like cake at all so we were upset at the cost of a wedding cake that neither of us would even be eating, We snubbed tradition and had a 3 tier flowing liquid chocolate fountain with fresh strawberries on skewer sticks!!! I might even do that for Christmas day. Fruit cake is soooooo disgusting not to even mention probably way past its use by date LOL...

I guess because it's traditional for some people to give it as a gift and it's easy to send in the mail. Apparently some people like it and just don't admit it. Shoot maybe it's good to give to the birds.

Because A LOT more people like it than would admit in public.

Try the Swiss Colony's version. You could totally die from it, it's so good.

Because it has rum in it! A good dose of alcohol makes the holiday go a lot smoother.
