I have been to both male and female gynecologists and feel equally comfortable with both. The majority of the time you're covered by a sheet, even though you're only wearing a gown or nude from the waist down. During a pelvic exam the doctor will have you put your feet into stirrups (just a place to rest your feet while your legs are elevated). They will insert a device called a speculum to hold your vagina open enough, so they can exam your cervix and use a swab to take samples for a pap smear. Tell the nurse that checks you in and prepares you to see the doctor that this is your first visit to the gyno. The nurse can explain what the doctor will do and the reason why. The doctor too should be explaining things while he/she does them, so you don't have any surprises. Its not the most fun experience in the world, but its certainly nothing to be afraid of.

It is normal to be scared the first time going to a gynecologist. I personally prefer male doctors. I have found in my own experience that some female doctors are cold and condescending to female patients.

In my opinion it is best to go to a woman doctor for your first time. Just because you may feel a little violated and weird with a male looking at your vagina. What they do for a pap smear is make you put your feet up in stirups and spread your legs and they but a contraption inside of your vagina and take a small tissue sample. It doesnt hurt that much, just like a little pinch and you may feel a little pressure. I think for your first time the embarrasment is the worst part. Good luck.

I'd have to say I feel more comfortable with a female. So basically you take everything off and they make you put on a gown. You put your feet in stirrups and slide your butt all the way down to the edge of the table. Then she looks inside of you and inserts an instrument to open the vagina up. She feels your ovaries and cervix. She also checks for lumps in your breast.
Good luck!

Um, wow...
Don't fret about the gynecologist so much, babe...if you get a male doctor, a female nurse must be in attendance; in most hospitals, anyway.
This being your first time, go with a female doctor.

I go to a practice where there is one male doctor & one female. I think they are both awesome. You have to take off your clothes from the waist down & put on a robe. You lay on a table & put your feet in stirrups. You put a sheet over your knees & open them. The doctor (with an assistant) will be in the room with you. You will get a speculum (did i spell that right?) into you & open you up. He/she will insert a q-tip to get samples of the cells around your cervix. That's it.

they check your weight, height, blod pressure, then they exam you. I prefer a guy. I just don't want a woman touching me down there. I have the best gynecologist in the world. He delivered my son 2 months ago.

I prefer a woman OBGYN... The doctor will have you lie on your back and place your feet in stirrups. He/She will then place metal clamps to open you up. They will then insert an instrument that somewhat resembles a pipe cleaner. Then, they will "scrape your uterus." It sounds waay more horrible than it actually is. After a brief examination to make sure everything looks normal, it will be over. Fin.
