A maximum "full-scale" deflection of the oil pressure guage is an idication of a faulty pressure switch or grounded wire to switch. If you meant 100% oil pressure as a normal reading then the light below the panel is your concern. The light is a low-level indicator, check the dipstick,if ok,then a visit to a reputable Mercedes-exp. shop is recommended. Good luck!

The sending unit is probably bad. The spring that resists the oil pressure is probably broken and registering either 0 or 100% - more like a switch than linear.

In Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the oil pressure guage is supposed to PEG to the right when engine is cold. This is completely normal and is so stated in owner's manual. As the engine warms up, it will gradually drop. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, and engine at idle, it should not go lower than 0.5 bar (The minimum allowed value is in your manual, but I believe it was 0.5 bar) and it shoudl PEG at moderate RPM.

What light are you talking about? As far as I know, 87 W126 does not have oil lamp....

If your referring to the light that is at the bottom of the instrument cluster that shows an oil can. this light is the indicator that your oil LEVEL is to low and to check your dipstick and add oil. You can have oil pressure but be low on oil and get this light.
