lights ,radio all worked so i figured it wasn't the battery had it tested was fine then all of a sudden it started any ideas what it could of been i dont want to get stuck some where and i have no money to take it at the moment anyone have any suggestions thanks.

Ok Starting the car is THE biggest drain on the battery, maybe the lights will come on - but if a cell has 'died' in the battery - the battery will not have enough to crank the car.
Second possibility, the starter is shot OR the solenoid that engages the starter.

and good point by previous answer - make sure your cable have clean connections - no corrosion (the white stuff) - that will kill the battery power

Is there a scrapping sound when you start the car? It sounds like the starter needs replacing. If you have no money to repair it be prepared to take public transit cause it will just get worse to the point were it will not start for you.

Low powered batteries cannot crank a car engine.
One good suggestion is:
Your car is more than a decade now, maybe it's time to send it to the junk yard. Maybe, it just ended its life span.
Don't get offended but what I'm telling you is true.
Your car is definetely an old one. so, TRASH IT !!!

My parents had a similar problem on their Ford F150 1992 (I think) and it was the starter solinoid, you could buy a new starter solinoid, starter, and/or battery and replace it/them yourself.

More than likely you need a new solenoid.

maybe starter solenoid, or loose/corroded cable ends.
