Texas and New York are quite pretentious. Oregon (except for the self-righteous hippies) and Colorado aren't very pretentious. Why would you think New York wasn't pretentious? That's their biggest stereotype.
I live in New Mexico, and I see a lot of people from Colorado and Texas. From my personal experiences, the Texans are way more full of themselves compared to the people from Colorado.
I'd say the most are states like New York, California, Massachusetts, and Texas. Basically, it's the big places that get a lot of attention.
The least are all the states that have nothing going on: the mid-west and south.

The only time I ever felt like an entire state didn't like me was in the 70's (yeah, I am old). A friend of mine and myself went on a roadtrip--two 18 year old girls. I had a new car, and we had plenty of money and we were treated just fine all through Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana.
Before I go further, I should tell you we were quite into the hippy look, long hair, headbands, big hoop earrings...but everyone was wonderful.
UNTIL
We got to Utah. Especially Salt Lake City. WOW. People actually looked over their shoulders to take a second look at us. And we weren't that far out into left field with our clothing--just bell bottom pants and halter tops--but holy cow, what a feeling of prejudice.

Funny I live in Northern Cali after just moving from Nevada & have never met so many nice sweet, caring people. You can't put a whole state in a box. It's just not possible...it's diff from city to city and town to town.
In Nor Cali we have lots of farm land...your telling me the farmers that grow the lettuce are pretentious. Just odd...I HATE LABELING!

I love you, because you included my state, New York, in your nicest/least pretentious list... and I agree with you... I agree with all the way... what about Nevada, the state of the Sin City... where would you include this state? I think it could be included in both...

I think you have it backward. Just because us new englanders aren't falling all over ourselves to say "how Y'all doing" doesn't make us rude. Aren't all the states that you listed as Nicest/least prententious have clan meetings, as I recall South Carolina just recently had to remove the confederate flag from their state house. Yup that sounds like a friendly state.

As a native South Dakotan, I can assure you that the list is true! All my teenage years I wanted to get away from South Dakota, now after three years of living away from home all I want to do is get back!
