If H=total people below the poverty line, and Yp=the poverty line in $, I know that TPG=(Yp x H)/__ I don't know what to divide by.

An example I have is: N=(total population)=1016, H=353, and Yp=$365. So TPG=($365 x 353)/4.232= $30,407. Where does the 4.232 come from???

This looks like something a government economist/statistician might come up with. I went to google and looked up Total Poverty Gap, then scanned a few articles about Canada, South Africa, and Malawi.

The Total Poverty Gap is the amount of money poor people would need to get them up to the poverty line.

It looks to me like someone first fixes the poverty line -- $365 in your example. Then they see how many people fall below that line -- 353 in your example.

Now, those 353 people do have income, and it's necessary to know how much. In your example, those people averaged $278.86 each. (That's the number you need.)

Since the poverty line is $365, and the poor people averaged $278.86, then on the average, they came up $86.14 short.

Now take this $86.14 shortfall and divide it into the $365. You'll get 4.237 ... very close to your 4.232.

This 4.237 is the factor which must be divided into the $365 to get the $86.14 which, on the average, each poor person must get in order to get up to the poverty line.

And if you multiply by the number of poor people, 353, you get this:

($365 / 4.237) x 353 people = $30,409

which is the Total Poverty Gap.

So I think that's where your number comes from. To get the Total Poverty Gap, you must know how much income the poor people have, on the average. Once you have that, then any competent government bureaucrat/economist/statistician can do the rest.

The problem can be broken down into 3 resistances all in series. The 0.2 ohm battery A the 0.1 ohm battery B and the unknown ohm resistance of the light bulb. Knowing that the total current I = 0.5A and the total voltage will be 3.0V since the two 1.5 V batteries are in series the total power of the circuit will be P = V*I P = 3.0 * 0.5 = 1.5W Since P = R*I^2 The total resistance of the circuit will equal the total power divided by the square of the total current Rt = Pt / It^2 Thus R = 1.5 / (0.5^2) = 6 ohms Knowing that Rt = R1 +R2 + R3 .... etc for a series RL = 6 - 0.2 - 0.1 = 5.7 ohms and the power dissipated by the batteries will be equal to (RA + RB) / Rt Power disipated by batteries = (0.2 + 0.1) / 6 = 1/20 to Recap Total Resistance = 6 ohms Resistance of Ligh bulb = 5.7 ohms Total power of circuit = 1.5 W Fraction of power dissipated by betteries = 1/20
