I believe it's called Plan B and you can usually get it at the local Planned Parenthood. I think it costs anywhere between 30-60 dollars, but I could be wrong. It prevents your body from releasing an egg that could potentially be fertilized. If you have already concieved, however, it does nothing.

"Emergency Contraceptive or Post-Coital Contraception."
When I went and got one it was $75
And they said it's effective if you take it within 72 hours of sexual intercourse.
There are two forms of emergency contraception:

There are two types of emergency contraceptive:

- pills which must be started within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

- the Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD), which must be inserted within five days of possible fertilisation.

The emergency pill is normally taken as two pairs of pills, 12 hours apart.

Due to the 72 hour time frame for treatment to be given, there is some flexibility in when the pills can be taken. If possible the first two pills should be taken in the morning and the last two at night, to avoid the common side effect of nausea from the pills (due to the oestrogen hormone).

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects from the pills, but this can be reduced by taking them with substantial meals. Sometimes anti-nausea (antiemetics) are prescribed in conjunction with emergency contraception.

Vomiting within three hours after taking the pills may cause the emergency contraception to fail. Women are usually advised to take another dose if vomiting occurs, especially if there is a high pregnancy risk. However, some experts believe the vomiting implies that the pills have had a strong effect and do not need to be replaced.

Your next period may be on time or it may come early or late.

I think what you are talking about is the morning after pill. I took it once, but a very long time ago. I'm pretty sure you need to get a doctor to write the prescription to get it, but it can be found at most pharmacies and doesn't cost too much. And yes, it is to stop you from getting pregnant if you think there is a real chance you may get pregnant. For example, the condom broke, you had unprotected sex and so on. Hope you find what you are looking for.

the morning after pill or emergency contraception pill. i only know because i was raped and had to take this pill. it made me very sick and i felt bad because i felt as though i could be aborting a baby in a sense. then i had to remind myself that this was not a situation that i wanted to become pregnant in and i told myself that it was just like doubling up on my birth control pills if i had missed a few pills - which essentially is what it is. by the way i found out later that if you are already pregnant it will not harm the baby or prevent that pregnancy it will just stop the sperm from reaching your ovary if it hasnt already

to be specific its Postinor2. Should be consumed within 72 hours of intercourse. There's 2 pills that need to be taken, the second one after 12 hours.

Like any other contraceptive methods, it has its side effects.

You can usually get it at your local health dept. I don't know the name of it, but I'm positive that someone at the health dept or even your local hospital will know what your talking about.....next time be more careful. And to answer your question.....yes it does prevent someone from getting pregnant unless it's already starting and then it can cause birth defects in the baby or other problems with the pregnancy.
