By your description (?) it sounds like you may be talking about a Ficus benjamina or Weeping Fig tree. If so, this plant does best with little care. In other words, keep it a little on the dry side, watering only when the top two inches of the soil is dry. Ficus b. doesn't like change much so, when transplanting, don't disturb the roots and when you find a location for it, don't move it again. Ficus have a tendency to suddenly drop their leaves when anything changes, like light conditions, transplanting or over-watering. If this happens, stabilize the plant and watch for new growth. Otherwise, once you find the right, medium light location for it, it should be a trouble free plant for you.

a ficus is a very nice tree which will grow to enormous levels , but it has lots of requirements , such as plenty of room and kept away from drains , for not unlike willows , they'll go 'feral' .
if you want for a pot plant as an ornamental --- this can be done without much fuss --- just shape it , don't give it to much of a drink , and trim the roots at the bottom of the pot if they want to invade . they really don't need any fertiliser ( they don't need to be encouraged to grow ) . good luck .
