Every 5 years it was good to update your system because the new one had double the power! Hence 8-bit was turned into 16 bit, then 32 bit then 64, 128 and so forth, but now people are getting ripped off, ps3 is not even double the capacity of ps2, I doubt it is even that much better, it probably has just a bit better graphics and memory, so why is it worth 600$+?

I think the main hook of the ps3 is the built in wifi, the blueray reader, and the 3 cell processors. and i have read that it costs over 900 to make the ps3, so when you look at it that way, your getting a GREAT deal. also you have to consider the controller, with the sensitivity to movement, when you turn it left, as does you car/skateboard, etc. All those together in one system do make it sound much nicer, but i agree with you, there is no way im spending 600+ on a video game system! it just isnt happening for me.

I dont know about the game engine but as of now it is worth for the BluRay DVD format. If you are interested in BluRay DVDs. Other wise I will advise (and thats what I am doing) wait and see how it suffers.
Well as number of bits go up there are lot of techinal issues and that does drive up cost.
PS3 will have to be better than PS2. I am pretty sure Sony will have tried a lot to keep cost lower because now PS3 is like 200$+ costly than XBOX.
Will fo some more reading for commenting on the bits.

...Well, it's got awesome graphics to the point of looking like a movie. It also has multimedia capabilities (movies, mp3, Blu-Ray). In addition, the controller has motion sensing capabilities.
The $600 one has SIXTY gigabytes of hard drive. For the Blu-Ray alone, it's probably still a bargain. Oh, and the graphics are MUCH MUCH MUCH better than either of the other two consoles.

In one word: YES.
Remember how good the PS2 was, the PS3 is roughly 35 times more powerful. Thats why its worth it.
Also bit processing in the PS3 is as good as you can get.

I heard it going to have problems at launch so i would be careful.
