I would answer that in two answers.....
The one greatest thing tha has been done for all mankind would be Salvation.... it is the only hope we have.... Some do not know it, and those who do, will make strives to hold on to it, like suckling babes.......
The second greatest thing... I would say is the internet...... Information travels at the speed of light now...... Just imagine having to send Paul Revere to the UK from the states with a, "Dear John, I'm gone" letter.......

Man! this is the toughest philosophical question I've seen on yahoo! answers yet. my congrats. but I'm going to take a stab at it anyway. Being a christian I was thinking right away about J.C but your question was for ALL of mankind. Since christians are vastly outnumbered in this world that won't work. I would have to say the formation of religions in general. This has affected mankind's ability to function since the beginning of recorded history. It gives people a guide on how to live in a manner that their society finds right and acceptable be they christian, muslim, Buddhist or anything else.

I would say the greatest thing that mankind has done for itself is the invention of writing. It has enabled us to communicate with people far away and in different times. By sharing that knowledge and rich culture, we are able to build upon the work of our ancestors and progress further than we could on our own.

According to Winston Churchill it was the Lend Lease Agreement between the United States and Great Britain during World War Two. I would disagree, but there's the opinion of someone who was rather great himself.
