Cirousity got the best of me...I've been noticing my Betta fish in his new 20 gall tank, just him and some bottom feeders, he has been flaring up lots, Was just wondering if he is doing this for fun, since he is doing it while swimming up and down, side to side etc, or is he intimidated by something? Just wanted to know if i should be worried or whatever. BTW, he is completely healthy, nothings wrong with him or anything.

Bettas are known to be aggressive fish so sometimes they're hyper and constantly swimming up and down the side of the tank that's usually the personality of a betta it's nothing serious to worry about, but you need to incorporate more fish-only ones that are compatable with a Betta.

A betta who is scared or intimidated will not flare. He is going to run and hide. Betta seem to enjoy flaring and posturing, and most expert consider it good for the betta in moderation. (My boys at home get a 1/2 of smack talk time once or twice a week.) Most likely he is just seeing his reflection in the glass, and is having a grand ol' time. It's only an issue if he doesn't have a place in the tank to hide, and rest when he gets tried, or scared.
PS- Betta are from Thailand not Japan;-)

I agree with all of the great advice you have received so far, but also keep in mind that Betta's will make little bubbles around the top of the tank when they are happy. The more bubbles, the happier they are - so look for those bubbles to determine if he is ill or unhappy.
I love those little fish - they are so fun to watch and I sear they are smarter than some of the other fish. :o)

Betta's can be quite territorial but the one's I've had have always gotten along with other fish. Maybe he's just warning? If he's not attacking he should soon settle down but keep an eye on the fish for signs of injury, just in case.

flaring is a good sign he's healthy... he's like a peacock. Flaring is a sign of aggression and showing off.
bettas are called Siamese Fighting Fish (southeast asia)... i'm not sure where Japan got into the mix

Do you have the tank light on when he is doing this? He may be seeing his reflection in the glass are just posturing to "claim" the tank from the bottom feeders.

He might be seeing his reflection in the glass. My betta flares whenever I come near and I waas told that it did that because it was familiar with me(ie:it likes me!)It may be doing it just for fun too.
