The online game Second-Life, can people commit 'virtual' crimes like stealing from others, or is it possible for a charachter to die or be killed in the game?

There certainly can be crime, real or virtual, in SL. As yet, that has not been much of a problem, but the potential is there.

Theft is difficult, because objects are protected (ignoring CopyBot for a moment). Harrassment and Fraud are easy. however, there is a sort of police system, and you can report ppl that wrong you, and the authorities will investigate and take action.

As for death, it works like this. If you "die" you reappear a moment later at your home base, and can then start out again. You die when your health drops from 100 down to 0. In most areas of SL, your health is fixed at 100, so you can't die.

If "Damage" is turned on, as it is in some adventure/combat areas, then you can be hurt by high speed collisions. Get hit enough, and your health reaches 0 and you "die."

CopyBot: A lot of the art work and the objects in SL are copyright whoever created them. Recently, some people released the equivalent of an SL VCR. So, using CopyBot, people can copy and duplicate copyrighted objects.

"Damage" can only be done in regions whose owners have designated that it can happen. "Death" simply results in the avatar being returned to their "home" location.

Every item in Second Life has an "owner" associated with it, and a set of "permissions". I don't think it's possible to take anything that isn't yours. You may take a copy if the object's creator allows it.
